SHILLONG, AUG 18: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations has pressed the state government to act without further delay on amending the Constitution (ST) Order, 1950 and implementing Inner Line Permit in Meghalaya.
In a statement on Tuesday, CoMSO said both issues are tied to indigenous rights, land, jobs and cultural identity, and cannot be left pending.
On the ST Order, it said while a government committee exists, “committees and meetings cannot become an excuse for indefinite delay.” CoMSO asked the government to disclose the current status and steps taken with the Centre, and to take the matter to its conclusion.
On ILP, the group reiterated its demand for immediate rollout, stating it is meant to regulate entry of outsiders and not to hinder tourism, business or education. Noting that the Assembly has already backed ILP, CoMSO urged the government to pursue it with the Centre at the highest level and secure a time-bound response.
“The people of Meghalaya have waited long enough for substantive action,” CoMSO said, adding it expects a clear roadmap with timelines for both demands.
It warned that continued inaction would compel the organisation, along with its constituents, to take “further necessary actions” to pursue the demands.
