SHILLONG, AUG 22: Shillong witnessed a fuel crisis on Saturday with several petrol pumps shutting down after running dry, following suspension of petrol, diesel and LPG transportation from Assam by the North-East Petroleum Mazdoor Union.
The union suspended supply citing safety concerns for Assam-registered vehicles in Meghalaya after the August 19 violence and said the blockade will continue until their safety is ensured.
With oil tankers stranded at Khanapara, panic buying was reported across the city.
Pumps opposite St. Edmund’s and at Nongmensong ran out of stock by morning, while those at Malki, Fire Brigade and Mawlai-Mawiong shut by afternoon after operating on reserve stock.
The Malki pump had earlier capped sales at Rs 200 for two-wheelers and Rs 1,000 for four-wheelers.
Only a few pumps, including Samkhamti at Demseiniong, remained operational with stock likely to last for two to three more days.
