DGP constitutes 5-member SIT for time-bound probe into Aug 19 violence

SHILLONG, AUG 22: The Meghalaya Police has constituted a five-member Special Investigation Team headed by IGP (Law & Order) DNR Marak to probe the violence, arson and assaults during the KSU’s bike rally and black-flag march in Shillong on August 19.

The SIT, formed by DGP Idashisha Nongrang, includes DIG (Eastern Range) S Nongtnger, East Khasi Hills SP V Syiem, SP (Cyber) Dheeraj Yadav and DySP (Crime) Bipul Das, with provision for additional personnel if required.

The team will ascertain the cause of the violence that led to damage to public and private property and assaults on public and police, investigate all registered cases to ensure uniformity in law, and identify and apprehend those involved — including masked persons and bikers who hid their number plates — through CCTV and video evidence.

It will also examine whether organisers violated conditions on which permission for the rally was granted and complete the probe in a time-bound manner to ensure justice as per law.
