SHILLONG, SEPT 2: Lawyers in Meghalaya will resume court work from Thursday after the Shillong Bar Association (SBA) and the High Court Bar Association decided to temporarily suspend their agitation over demand for removal of the Advocate General.
The decision came after a meeting with the state government chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday.
Cabinet minister Lahkmen Rymbui was also present in the meeting.
When contacted, SBA secretary TL Jyrwa said the Deputy Chief Minister acknowledged the seriousness of the matter and assured that the government will examine the genuine concerns raised by the bar.
Jyrwa said the government has sought two weeks to review the matter and has assured to meet the bar members again within a week.
As an interim measure, the government has directed the Advocate General and his team not to appear on behalf of the state during this period.
“Though it is interim in nature, we take it as the government has accepted our demand,” Jyrwa said.
He said the lawyers were compelled to resort to agitation due to the government’s inaction.
“We did not want to take this path, but due to the apathy of the government, we had to,” he added.
He clarified that the agitation has only been paused and not withdrawn.
“Our demand remains one — removal of the Advocate General. We have only paused the agitation for two weeks. If after the review, removal does not happen, we will announce that the agitation will continue,” Jyrwa said.
