SHILLONG, AUG 31: Twenty-two vulnerable youth have enrolled in vocational training under DREAM YOUNG, a new initiative of the DREAM Mission that shifts drug prevention from “Say No to Drugs” to “Prevention with Action”.
The programme targets school dropouts and youth from underprivileged families.
Of the 69 youth identified by Seng Kynthei Katholic, Zone 2 and oriented at a Skill Centre in April, 22 have enrolled in various trades at ITI Shillong, Don Bosco Technical School and Don Bosco Youth Centre after counselling.
DREAM Director Francis Kharshiing said the idea is to give youth a reason to say yes to life through skills and employment, which can make them economically independent and reduce vulnerability to substance abuse.
The initiative is being implemented with the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society and other skill institutions.
The Mission has also written to all Deputy Commissioners to review and strengthen ITIs in their districts.
The next counselling and enrolment drive will be held at ITI Shillong on Tuesday at 10 am.
