Normalcy returns to Shillong after Aug 19 violence, security forces withdrawn

SHILLONG, SEP 1: East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal on Tuesday said Shillong is returning to normalcy following the violence on August 19 during the KSU’s black flag bike rally.

He said the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and Rapid Action Force (RAF) deployed in the aftermath have been withdrawn as talks are on with the organisation and its agitation has been called off for now.

“Normalcy has returned. Tourists are also returning to the city and district,” Baranwal said. He, however, said tourist footfall is yet to reach pre-August 19 levels.

“Bookings are returning, but I cannot say we have recovered the same number of tourists as on August 18,” the DC said.

Asked about fresh cases registered against KSU leaders, Baranwal said the Superintendent of Police would be able to respond.
