SHILLONG, AUG 19: East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem on Wednesday said the Khasi Students’ Union rally turned violent, leaving 31 vehicles vandalized and civilians assaulted across Shillong.
“People walking on the streets were beaten up without any reason. A bus ferrying children was also affected. One vehicle was set ablaze,” Syiem told reporters.
The rally had been given permission after organizers submitted an undertaking for a peaceful protest.
“We did not expect this. It is sad that peace and tranquility in the city has been affected,” the SP said.
Syiem said residents remain worried in the aftermath.
“Till now, people are still calling to enquire if it is safe to move out. Citizens are frightened,” he said, adding “this is a total violation of the law of the land. We will take necessary action.”
Police reported incidents from Firebrigade, Nongmensong, Polo, Barik and Mawlai.
In Nongmensong, a government bus carrying women and children was attacked. Videos from Firebrigade showed masked protesters smashing vehicle windows.
Earlier, KSU activists staged a brief protest at the Main Secretariat, putting up banners accusing the government of corruption in recruitment.
Police removed the banners and tightened security.
The rally was held after the KSU held public meetings on August 17 and 18 following a 15-day deadline to the government.
The union’s five-point charter includes action over the July 31 Shree Cement public hearing in East Jaintia Hills, full implementation of the MRSSA 2016 with entry-point facilitation centres, implementation of the amended Migrant Workmen Act 2020, recruitment reforms at NEIGRIHMS, and removal of interviews for Grade B, C and D posts.
