SHILLONG, AUG 17: Footpaths and roads in Laitumkhrah were cleared on Monday as the Shillong Municipal Board relocated 86 hawkers to designated vending areas at Dhankheti and Brightwell Bungalow, Barik.
The drive is part of SMB’s effort to decongest one of the city’s busiest commercial areas and make it more pedestrian-friendly.
SMB CEO PK Boro said the relocation was carried out after a one-month notice period.
“Everything has been arranged. They are complying and cooperating with us,” Boro told reporters on site.
“This is not about one day. We issued notices giving them one month’s time and today is the day for relocation. They have all accepted and relocated,” he added.
The government is also providing financial assistance to the affected hawkers and street vendors, Boro said.
On hawkers operating along Jail Road, he said, “That is a different issue. We will take action accordingly.”
Most hawkers welcomed the move, saying they will now have proper stalls to carry out their livelihood activities. However, some expressed disappointment, alleging they were earlier promised to be shifted to the Fire Brigade.
One vendor, who has been selling in Laitumkhrah for the past 19 years, said she was unhappy with the new location.
“The market at the new vending area is different from Laitumkhrah. I don’t know if I will be able to sell my products there,” she said.
