SHILLONG, SEPT 16: Meghalaya has got its own distribution transformer testing laboratory at Sumer, with Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh inaugurating the MePDCL facility on Wednesday.
Built at a cost of around Rs 1.3 crore, the lab will test 11 kV/0.433 kV distribution transformers up to 500 kVA, allowing MePDCL to check quality and performance before deployment in the field.
The facility will be used for testing new transformers procured under RDSS and other schemes, besides repaired and refurbished units.
The lab has been set up with technical guidance from CPRI and support from REC Limited. As per an MoU signed between MePDCL and CPRI on November 14, 2025, CPRI provided support for establishment of the lab, installation and inspection of equipment, framing of testing procedures and NABL accreditation.
Lyngdoh lauded MePDCL, REC and CPRI and all engineers and technical staff involved in the project, and asked MePDCL to expedite NABL accreditation and optimally utilise the lab to improve quality, reliability and efficiency of power distribution in the state.
Once NABL accredited, the lab can also offer commercial testing services to manufacturers, utilities and other organisations, and emerge as a key distribution transformer testing facility for the entire North Eastern region.
