SHILLONG, AUG 26: The state cabinet on Wednesday approved amendments to the Meghalaya Identification, Safety and Security of Migrant Workers Rules and also cleared rules for the Meghalaya Flood Plain Zoning Act, 2026.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said amendments suggested by the Governor have been incorporated in the migrant workers rules.
He said the rules now have more clarity on roles, inspection procedures and enforcement powers.
“We have gone deep into all aspects of concerned officials who can do the inspection, how the inspection will be done and the powers that they have, what are the actions they can take. All these aspects have been clarified. Also, the fines, imprisonments and legal actions to be taken have been given more clarity,” Sangma said after the cabinet meeting.
He added that training will be provided to grassroots officials who will implement the rules.
On the Flood Plain Zoning Act, Sangma said, “We have the Meghalaya Flood Plain Zoning Act, 2026. Obviously we will have to pass the rules to implement the Act. So we have passed those rules in the cabinet.”
