SHILLONG, SEP 2: The state government has requested the Advocate General (AG) not to appear in court for two weeks while it examines the demand for his removal by lawyers.
The demand was raised by the Shillong Bar Association and the High Court Bar Association.
Law Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said he met both associations on Tuesday where they listed their grievances, and a follow-up meeting was held Wednesday in presence of the Deputy Chief Minister.
“They are against the functioning of the Advocate General, where they want his removal,” Rymbui said, adding that the associations attended the meeting at short notice.
On the removal demand, he said being a constitutional post, the matter has to be taken up at the level of the Council of Ministers.
As an interim measure, Rymbui said the Deputy Chief Minister has requested the Bar to cooperate while the government requests the AG to stay off.
“We will request the AG that in these two weeks he will not appear in the cases,” he said, adding another meeting will be held next week to review all issues.
He appealed to the lawyers to withdraw their agitation pending talks.
“We request them to cooperate and withdraw their agitation… it is not very easy for the government to respond in very short notice,” he said.
Rymbui said the Bar has agreed to place the government’s proposal before its members.
“They are happy with what the Deputy Chief Minister has mentioned, I hope that they will withdraw,” he said, adding other grievances will be relooked and corrective steps taken.
