NPP govt only one to pass resolution against uranium mining, says Dr Nonglait; recalls Hoping’s stand

SHILLONG, SEP 6: Shillong Lok Sabha by-poll NPP candidate Dr DRL Nonglait on Saturday said West Khasi Hills’ biggest fear – uranium mining – was addressed only by the NPP-led MDA government.

Addressing voters at Maweit in Mawshynrut, he said, “One thing West Khasi Hills fears most is an attempt to mine Uranium. Bah Hoping used to say, if you mine Uranium, mine my heart first, but no government took an Assembly resolution. It is this NPP government.”

Dr Nonglait said the government also dared to take decisions on Eighth Schedule and ILP where others hesitated.

“…in the Assembly it took a resolution to include Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule. We have demanded it for many years but it is the MDA government led by NPP that dared to take it. For ILP also and for making Khasi an official language, it is this government,” he said.

Hitting out at the opposition, he said, “They say this is a government that does not work, that does not listen to people. That is not true.”

To prove his point, he listed development in West Khasi Hills.

“C&RD Block Shallang was opened in 2022, at Nonglang also there is a block apart from many schemes and this is because the government works. The Nongstoin-Rambrai-Kyrshai road is now very good and it is this government that brought it,” he said.

He said his decision to join the NPP was based on its performance.

“I have measured and weighed before standing on this political platform. Why am I working with this party? Because I see this party does good work,” he said.
