Stop blame game, fix Jorabat waterlogging jointly: Mukul to Assam-Meghalaya

SHILLONG, AUG 25: Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma on Tuesday said the chronic waterlogging at Jorabat-Khanapara is a man-made structural problem caused by choked culverts and not natural flooding.

Inspecting the stretch on Sunday, Sangma said the highway has turned into a drain as culvert exits are blocked, risking commuters’ lives and blocking ambulances.

He said agencies like MoRTH, NHAI and PWD are legally bound under Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety norms to ensure safe roads and golden hour access, but compliance is missing.

Urging Assam and Meghalaya to jointly resolve the issue instead of blaming hill cutting in Meghalaya, he said the stretch is the gateway to Guwahati and its airport and, “It is a shame that they don’t look at this area of concern.”
